In the placement match for place seven, Italy met the newcomers from Serbia. The Squadra Azzurra, at their third World Championship, drove home a 3:0 victory. The Serbian team kept in reach in all three sets – losing by two and four points, respectively, in the first two sets.
The third set was even tighter: Serbia had two set balls at 10:9 and 11:10, respectively. Italy kept calm and had two match points of which they scored the second one to a 14:12 win. The team of coach Philipp Frasnelli thus finished seventh in the tournament, one place ahead of Serbia. At their first participation, the Serbian team showed great potential and promise for the future.
Claudine Piha (ITA): I am really happy to have won this last match against Serbia. The loss against Poland was really hard for us. We fought for this win today.
Edi Hagen, Coach (SRB): We have never played on a gras-court prior to this championship. We have never even practiced it. We got used to the court-soil and got better and better throughout this championship. We changed the line-up a little for this game and put Kassandra [Hagen] in the middle, which worked well. We enjoy playing fistball and did not end up in the last place. The girls are on fire, on fire for fistball.
