In their first match of the day, host Austria met newcomer New Zealand. The Austrian team took the initiative early on and won the first set with 11:3. However, the New Zealanders bounced back and took the lead in the second set, pulling ahead with 2:0. The Austrians then re-seized control of the game and went on to win the set with 11:2, and thus the match. New Zealand delivered again a good performance and showed potential and promise for the future.
Janine Brunner (AUT): We did not know the team from New Zealand because this is their first championship. We were very concentrated and managed to build up our attacks. The girls from New Zealand played a great match. All in all, I enjoyed playing this game.
Birgit Kempinger, Coach (NZL): I am really proud of my girls. Especially in the second set, when they managed to take the lead. The entire team has such a great energy and they celebrate every point they make. They were looking forward to play against Austria and in my opinion, other teams can learn a lot from the attitude of this team. They really enjoy playing fistball.
