Recap

Brazil Wins Bronze Medal

Brazil scored a clear 4:0 victory over the Austrian host team and thus won the Bronze medal at the IFA 2018 Fistball Women’s World Championship.

Austria came well out of the starting blocks in set one, scoring the first point. At 2:2 the host team pulled ahead until mid of the set, attacker Ines Mayer secured several strong points. On the Brazilian side it was Tatiane Schneider who impressed with her serves. At 9:8 for Brazil, the Austrian squad took a time out. The Seleção stayed calm and drove home an 11:9 set win.

The second set was a clear matter for the Brazilian team. While the Austrians kept in reach until 5:6, the Brazilians controlled the rest of the set, and with a great attack by Tatiane Schneider they secured a 2:0 lead in sets.

The hosts are now under pressure in the third set. With support from their home crowd they catch up a two-point Brazilian set lead and attacker Ines Mayer equalizes to 5:5. She then serves an ace and Austria leads with 7:6. The teams are head-to-head until 14:14, set point for both teams – Ines Mayer’s serve hits the net. Brazil takes the set and establishes a 3:0 lead.

The Austrian team does not give up, and pushes hard in set four, pulling ahead with a three-point lead. However, the Brazilians bounce back, and make four points in a row. The set is open until 8:8, when Brazil scores two points and thus secures its first match point. The Austrians can defend the first Brazilian attempt, but the Seleção converts the second to an 11:9 set win.

The Brazilian team thus won the Bronze medal. It is their seventh medal at a World Championship.

Isabella Lucchin (BRA): We are happy and satisfied with our performance. However, we wanted more.

Verena Hieslmair (AUT): Brazil played a good game. They played on all Positions in a more constant manner than we did. In the most critical phases of the game, they managed to score. I think the sets were pretty close, 14:15, 9:11 and so on.
